Are You Doing Enough for Your Employeesâ Mental Health Poor mental health can have a devastating impact on businesses and of course the employees themselves. Mental health disorders are becoming more common and given that we spend upwards of eight hours a day in the workplace, itâs time employers start to take accountability. Office furniture suppliers, DBI Furniture asked over 2,000 people if they felt like their employer could do more to support their mental health and wellbeing. The results showed us that: Just under half (48%) of respondents said that they would like more mental health support from their employer on some level 53% of 18-34 need more mental health support from their employer Thatâs not all the results show. When we dig down further into the data, we can see discrepancies depending on the age and gender of the respondents. The greatest difference was between the ages of participants. Millennials those responding who were aged between 18 and 34 were shown to want more support from their employer on some level, with a total of 53% saying yes. On the other hand, those considered to be in Generation X and older-aged between 45 and 64+ were less likely to ask for support, with just 46% saying yes. How to give more mental health support Learn what you need to recognize There is still a great amount of stigma surrounding mental health and talking about it openly, which creates a vicious cycle where people bottle up their feelings and end up worse. So itâs important that those in management within your business are trained in what to look out for, as not everyone will feel comfortable with approaching their manager and opening up the conversation. Sending anyone who wants to learn on a Mental Health First Aid course will ensure there are plenty of people who know what to look out for, and how to approach those they are worried about. Focus on the work-life balance Itâs not just a buzzword. Although work-life balance has become more prominent recently, it has always played an essential part in reducing stress and helping to prevent burnout. Flexibility regarding working hours is a huge part of this. Flex-time where people are allowed to adjust their start and end times can give employees greater control over their commute, can allow for more family time, and the chance to attend appointments without losing pay. And while you may not be able to stop people from taking their work home or checking their emails at the weekend, make sure you do everything you can to deter them. Make sure the focus is on them and their families once theyâre off the clock. Build an engaged workplace And then monitor it closely. Employee engagement is considered to be the antidote to burnout, and itâs something that is becoming more of a focus for companies. When people feel engaged in their work and the business they work for, they have more positivity and enthusiasm. While on the other hand, those who feel disengaged are at a higher risk of stress, burnout and alienation which all contribute to poor mental health. Employers need to be focusing on how their employees feel when theyâre at work and how they feel because of their work. As mental health is pushed into the spotlight, there will be even more pressure for businesses to take accountability and start making positive changes, so get ahead while you can. Companies who invest in mental wellbeing by breaking stigmas and bringing down barriers will benefit from creating a positive workplace. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Science Shows Why Trust in the Workplace is Critical A decade ago, Paul Zak began measuring brain activity from people while they worked and he soon made an important discovery: There are scientific reasons why some organizations perform at high levels while others flounder. He discovered from his tests that people work more effectively and deliver better results for their companies when they are working in trusted cultures, such as an environment where workers are not reprimanded or fired if they make a mistake. Zak, who is trained as an economist and a neuroscientist, helped launch the field known as neuroeconomics, which measures brain activity while people make decisions. If you want innovation, then you need to let people make mistakes, he says. Innovation requires taking a risk, and people need to know thats OK. In his new book, Trust Factor: The Science of Creating High-Performance Companies, Zak explains that hes sometimes been called a vampire economist because he takes blood from volunteers in order to measure neurochemical changes during decisions. Zak is the first scientist to show that the brain synthesizes the neurochemical oxytocin when people are trusted by others. The oxytocin then causes others to reciprocate trust by being trustworthy, he explains. In other words, its the oxytocin that is the biological underpinning for the Golden Rule, he says. If you treat me nice, my brain makes oxytocin, signaling that you are a person whom I want to be around, so I treat you nice in return, he says. Shocking Truth about Self-Esteem Revealed! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career For the last 30 years US parents, schools and youth athletic teams were all fed a singular, central message about how to rear successful children and guess what? They were wrong. All the developmental literature and experts have been pumping out the message: self-esteem is the #1 ticket to success. Thatâs why all the kids playing T-ball got a trophy, whether they won or not. Some leagues didnât even keep score. After all, athletic contests werenât about athletic ability, training, or practicing. And, they certainly werenât about real winning. They were engineered to be all about building up your self-esteem. Hence, the endless ribbons, trophies and even grade inflation that were meant to fill up the well of self-esteem that would somehow flow over into a river of success. Schools and parents were fed, and then recycled a stream of âbuild them upâ rhetoric, because children were supposed to be protected from feeling the pain of poor performance and criticism. Competition and comparison were evil doers. Self-esteem was to be preserved at all times. No one was better, we were all just different. At least thatâs the way it has been in the US. Of course, from other cultures we heard about draconian measures taken by so-called âtiger parents,â who pressured, demanded, and withheld any fun that could possibly get in the way of perseverance. In the US, parents were supposed to be helicoptering around their kids, so that all possible praise and good fortune wouldnât dim the bulb of self-esteem. Turns out all that is hogwash. Self-esteem, earned or not, isnât a causal factor of success. Self-esteem is a by-product of success. If not, you simply have a person with a bloated ego, poor self-management and a complete misunderstanding of what work is. This is why so many managers are completely perplexed about their entry level employees. Many of these new workers seem to think that simply showing up is the job â" and by the way, when is the next raise and promotion??? I hear an endless litany of complaints from their managers. These folks donât spell check their work , they donât finish their work, and they have only a very casual relationship with deadlines. Plus, they donât get along with other people at work, clients included. Someone owes us all an apology. Itâs not self-esteem that leads to success. Self-control leads to success. In the famous, âcan-you-wait-for-two-marshmallowsâ test with young children who were sat in front of one marshmallow they could eat on-the-spot ⦠you guessed it. What happened to the children who waited; that fraction of the group who exhibited self-control? Decades later, they were successful adults! The one-marshmallow eaters were far behind in wages, job titles and life in general. Self-control â" the ability to patiently wait, to think about future reward while working hard in the present â" that is all you need to succeed. So if you feel unjustifiably proud of yourself for having all those little trophies? Donât worry. Thereâs a new chance, every time the sun comes up. Today, you can practice being polite, waiting your turn, or get working on something that is really difficult â" and wonât pay off for years to come. It turns out self-control builds character. And, thatâs what it takes to pursue a vision for your own business or build a career in a company or industry. Now get to work!

Some will even offer employees experience days once a year or vouchers to spend with their family on days out. Qualifications and Experience Depending on the industry or sector that you work in, there may be minimum qualifications or experience requirements for management position and above. Its important to read the job description thoroughly and to research any qualifications youâre not sure about. You may be able to take some qualifications while you are doing the job.
